PHP2Shell: A Practical Guide for Indian WordPress Businesses

For Indian business owners and agencies, the immediate task is to confirm hosting patches and decide whether suspicious activity needs its own investigation.

Start with the official advisory

On 21 October, the PHP project released security fixes for CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619. The vulnerabilities can allow unauthenticated remote code execution. Updating WordPress alone does not update the PHP runtime. Refer to the PHP advisory for current technical details.

Ask your provider for patch evidence

Ask which runtime build serves your domain, whether both fixes are included and whether all web workers are using that build. Hosting vendors may supply backported fixes. Do not determine exposure from a version banner alone.

Please confirm fixes for CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619 on the PHP runtime serving our site, with the relevant package or vendor advisory and any outstanding actions for our account.

Plan changes around your website

Our recommended process is to agree authorised access, preserve backups and available logs, define rollback options, coordinate the update, and test the functions customers use. Include sign-in, forms, uploads, checkout and integrations as applicable. Record any checks that could not be completed.

Do not confuse patching with cleaning

An affected installation does not prove an incident. An updated installation can still contain an existing backdoor or stolen credentials. Redirects, unfamiliar accounts and repeat infections warrant investigation; they do not identify PHP2Shell as the cause.

If compromise is suspected, preserve available evidence and agree the investigation scope before destructive changes. Recovery may require reviewing files, databases, scheduled jobs and related sites, or rebuilding in a trusted environment.

Make responsibility explicit

If your agency manages sites across several hosting accounts, record a technical owner and patch evidence for each account. Agree access, priorities and INR fees before assigning work.

Request a handover recording patch evidence, actions performed, functional test results and unresolved limitations. A scanner report alone cannot establish that every persistence mechanism is gone.
